Carol MartinSite:Search is a fast and efficient way to use LinkedIn—and most of the other social and business networking sites - because we can sidestep many of the rules and restrictions within these sites by tapping into the Public Profile.

There are three major advantages to searching LinkedIn via Google’s Site:Search.

1)All contacts’ full names are viewable.

2)The three degree rule does not apply.

3)You can easily cut and paste the search string into the other sites.

Our first step is to build the search string, and a good understanding of Boolean is necessary. If you need to brush up on Boolean go to: http://www.internet-recruiting-toolbox.com/boolean.html.

Our search will be for a packaging engineer, pharmaceutical industry, Philadelphia, PA area. The site we are using is LinkedIn.

The string will look like this in Google:

Note: For the most accurate results, go on LinkedIn's site to see how the industry and the cities are listed. In the industry option, scroll down till you see the exact phrase, remember to use quotation marks for multiple words.

There is no consistency in LinkedIn when listing cities. Enter your desired city into the LinkedIn Search box to see the exact phrase.

OR----once again my impatience has led to a nifty tool to speed up this process. For a complete list of LinkedIn City and Industries go to: LinkedIn City And Industry Shortcut

There are 4080 results from our search string, far too large. We can delete the Directory results by adding:

–intitle:directory to our search string.

This reduces our search to 216 – a manageable number, but it’s a mix of profiles and companies.

By adding intitle:linkedin, all the profiles will appear first, making viewing faster and easier.

Partial Results: Clicking on the name will take you to the full profile.

There a many, many ways to use site search. Do a national search with difficult requirements(keywords). Copy and paste different cities within a state to find a complete listing of contacts in any given state. The combinations are endless.

Note: If you do not use a city/state listing, it is very likely you will get international contacts. Still works, but more time will be needed to sift through your results.

Part 2 – SiteSearch in two weeks. No Tidbit the week before Memorial Day weekend.
