carol martinThere are many advantages to having a large first level on LinkedIn.  Besides the ability to send a brief message to all people on your first level, you also have an email address for each and every profile.  Contact information  is gold!

Searching your email contacts is the easiest way to find people you already know on LinkedIn.  My good friend and placing associate, Kris Slee of National Search Associates, used this method and within days double her first level contacts, form 450 to just under 1000.

From your LinkedIn homepage, click on Contacts, located top left and select Add Contacts.  Enter your email address and password, and LinkedIn will search your address book.

When you enter your email address and click the Continue button, LinkedIn will display a list of your email contacts. Check the boxes next to people you want to connect with, or Select All,  and click Send Invitation.

LinkedIn doesn't store your email password or any confidential information during this process. They import address book information from Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL and Hotmail using an interface they've provided.

Second  method, on the right of the Add Connections page is the Enter Email Address Option.  This is a fantastic way to build your first level with the types of contacts you need to complete your job searches.  Simply enter the email addresses, separated by a comma, and LinkedIn will forward an invitation to all who have a LinkedIn profile.

Be creative - collect email addresses from all candidates who forward a resume to your office, candidates already in your system, or resumes you collect from Monster, CareerBuilder, or other resume data bases.

Your goal should be to build as many profiles as possible on your first level.  Remember, every profile on your first level includes an email address

As always, good luck with your searches.
