Facebook is the new frontier to master in the search for candidates and a means of branding your business.  Facebook will be the topic of Today's Technology Tidbit the remainder of 2011, and well into 2012.  New information and Apps for searching Facebook are ongoing.  We will attempt to discover and learn these new techniques one Tidbit at a time.

Facebook Fan Page versus Facebook Personal Page

Profiles represent individuals and must be held under an individual name, while Pages allow an organization, business, celebrity, or band to maintain a professional presence on Facebook. You may only create Facebook Fan Pages to represent real organizations of which you are an authorized representative.

In addition, Fan Pages are managed by administrators who have personal Facebook profiles. Pages are not separate Facebook accounts and do not have separate login information from your profile. They are merely different entities on Facebook's site, similar to how Groups and Events function. Once you have set up a Fan Page within your profile, you may add other administrators to help you manage this page. People who choose to connect to your Fan Page won't be able to see that you are the page administrator, nor will they have any access to your personal account.

Personal accounts are optimized for individuals, not businesses. Facebook Fan Pages allow businesses to showcase their work and interact with fans. These pages come pre-installed with custom features designed for each category/type of business. Facebook Fan Pages are not subject to a fan limit and can automatically accept any number of fan requests.

NOTE:  If you do not have a personal Facebook account, go to https://www.facebook.com/ and fill out the Sign Up form located on the right.

Create Your Fan Page

To create your Fan Page, click on Create a Page located at the bottom of your Facebook Home Page.  Choose a category that best fits your business.  I choose Company, Organization, or Institution.  Setting up your new page is very similar to setting up a LinkedIn page, just follow the instructions.

For security reasons, until your account is confirmed, you will be unable to send messages, write on your friends’ Walls, post in discussions, poke, tag your friends in photos or notes, comment on content, or join groups or Fan Pages.

You can confirm your account and enable yourself to participate in the above activities in any of the following ways:

  • Follow the link in your sign up confirmation email.
  • Use the Friend Finder tool to see which of your email contacts have profiles on Facebook. To get to Friend Finder, simply roll over the Friends drop-down menu and click Find Friends.
  • Follow the link in any email notification you receive from Facebook.
  • To confirm your account with your mobile phone, you must be able to receive Facebook’s confirmation text on your mobile device. Enter your mobile phone number and Facebook will text you a special code to confirm that it’s your phone. Start by going to the Mobile Texts page.

To access your newly created Fan Page:  from your Facebook homepage, select Account (top right), then Use Facebook as a Page, then click on your Page Title.

Should you ever need or want to delete an old Fan Page (I did recently because of a change in format), you can do so quite easily.

Delete a Fan Page

  1. Click "Edit Page" underneath the profile picture when viewing your Page.
  2. Select "Manage Permissions" from the left sidebar.
  3. Click "Permanently delete this Page." Please keep in mind that once you delete your Page, there's no way to reinstate it.
