Bill would cut workforce by 10% by October 2014

Three leading Republicans on Monday introduced a bill that would cut the federal workforce by 10 percent by October 2014.

Reps. Darrell Issa of California, Dennis Ross of Florida and Jason Chaffetz of Utah — all strong critics of the federal government's recent growth to 2.1 million employees — introduced HR 2114, Reducing the Size of the Federal Government Through Attrition Act. The bill would allow the government to hire only one new employee for every three who leave until the reduction goal is met. The lawmakers estimate it will save $127 billion over a decade.

"The American people deserve a federal government that is smaller, leaner and more efficient," Chaffetz said. "Private-sector job creators and families in my district have learned to do more with less. So should the federal government."

Other workforce reduction bills would exempt specific agencies such as the Defense and Homeland Security departments, but HR 2114 does not. Ross has previously said in interviews that all agencies — even those involved in national security — must find places to trim their ranks.
