Leaves That Pay: Employer and Worker Experiences With Paid Family Leave in California
As family and work patterns have shifted over recent decades, the demand for time off from work to address family needs has grown rapidly. Women—and increasingly men as well—often find themselves caught between the competing pressures of paid work and family responsibilities, especially when they become parents, or when serious illness strikes a family member.
Each day, more and more Americans are taking advantage of the new free preventive services provided through the health care law. People of all ages can now get the preventive services they need, like mammograms and the new Annual Wellness Visit, free of charge. With more people taking advantage of these benefits, more lives can be saved, and costly, and often burdensome, chronic diseases can be prevented or caught earlier.
A client had the opportunity to participate in a group plan through their employer but was somewhat distressed (shocked, actually) at the cost. I asked if they had ever sought out comparative rates in the individual market. Their immediate response was the assumption that group health insurance was less expensive.
