HRCI's Official PHR®/SPHR® Certification Study Resources 05 Dec 2011 16:05 #1

The Official PHR®/SPHR® Certification Resources

What better than to go to the very resources who actually Create, Moderate, Write, and manage the exam - HRCI - (A Completely separate entity from SHRM)**

To help you study for the exam and assess your readiness to take it, we have developed the following resources:

the content areas of the certification exam www.hrci.org/certification/bok/
free 10-question practice quizzes www.hrci.org/Quiz/
Online Assessment Exams www.hrci.org/assessmentexam/
PHR/SPHR or GPHR Certification Guide www.hrci.org/certguides/

No two candidates come to the exam with the same knowledge base. Because experience and educational backgrounds are unique, these differences must be taken into consideration when determining a study method. While some individuals may take the exam without studying, the majority use some form of exam preparation. Because the exams measure mastery of the application of the HR knowledge base, it is impossible to train or teach to the exam. The best preparation is to understand the applicable HR knowledge base (also known as the exam content) and its application to HR practice.

The focus of any study program should be on the functional areas and the HR content that falls under those functional areas. Practice exams can help candidates who have not taken multiple-choice exams and refresh their test-taking skills. With the exception of the HR Certification Institute’s online assessment exams for the PHR, SPHR and GPHR exams, it is important to recognize that many practice exams may not reflect the true difficulty level of the actual exam questions.

The HR Certification Institute does not endorse any specific study preparation method or course, nor does it maintain information about them. In fact, we strongly recommend candidates use multiple reference materials when studying for the exam bit.ly/rKAmM1

** The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM): The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) are two separate organizations, although initially, the idea of establishing a credentialing organization grew from SHRM members and until the late 1980s, SHRM financially supported HRCI.
While HRCI and SHRM enjoy a warm affiliation, SHRM has no special access to the exam questions. In fact, HRCI advises candidates that there is no single "best" method to prepare for the exam that will work for everyone and encourages candidates to study from multiple sources. HRCI recognizes that candidates bring a variety of work experiences, educational backgrounds and learning styles to the exams and encourages them to assess preparation needs before applying for an exam.
In addition, because the PHR and SPHR exams are based on work experience, preparation courses should be viewed as refresher courses only. No course or study material can "teach" to either exam.

The Professional Examination Service (PES): is the testing vendor with whom the HR Certification Institute contracts. PES administers the PHR, SPHR, GPHR and California certification examinations, completes the official scoring, and mails the score reports and certificates. PES also maintains the item bank of test questions and provides the HR Certification Institute with statistical information. Founded in 1941, PES is a non-profit organization that specializes in the development and administration of certification and licensure exams. PES' primary mission is the development and delivery of exams of the highest quality. Exams are developed in conformance with the standards established by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME), the American Psychological Association (APA), the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the PES Guidelines for the Development, Use,
and Evaluation of Licensure and Certification Programs. PES is headquartered in New York City.

Prometric: is the global leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment services for information technology certification, academic admissions and professional licensure and certifications. Prometric delivers standardized tests for more than 300 clients, in more than 25 languages, over the Web or through a global network of testing centers in 121 countries. Prometric is the testing vendor with whom HRCI contracts for exam delivery services. These services include providing the scheduling, administering and proctoring of the exams.
